Dosage and administration
• Hypertension
• 50 mg daily either alone or added to diuretic therapy
• Optimal response is not achieved ,the dosage should be increased to 100mg daily
• Angina pectoris
• Some patient may require a dosage of 200mg once a day for optimal effect
• Cardiovascular complications should be treated symptomatically
• Post –myocardial infarction
• 100mg daily in single or divided doses
Contraindications
• Sinus bradycardia
• 2’ or 3’AV block
• Cardiogenic shock
• Cardiac failure
• Hypersensitivity to atenolol
Warning and precautions
• Pregnancy
• Can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman
• Nursing mothers
• Unknown
• Impaired renal function
• Shoud be used with caution
Side effects
• Bradycardia
• Hypotension
• Headache
• Dizzines
• Depression
• 2’ or 3’ block
• Precipitation of CCF
• Fatigue
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Coldness of extremities
