Amlodipine besylate equivalent to
• Amlodipine 5 mg & Atenolol 25 mg
• Amlodipine 5 mg & Atenolol 50 mg

Calcium Channel Blocker
Amlodipine
Action – inhibit the entry of calcium ions through the
calcium channels. This leads to:
(1) Coronary vasodilation - ¬ing oxygen supply
(2) Systemic vasodilation - ¯ing oxygen demand
(3) Negative inotropic effect - ¯ing oxygen demand
( ¯ in force of contration )

Beta Blocker
Atenolol
Action – block b1 receptors in the heart
– block b1 receptors in the kidney
(1) ¯ in rate and force of contraction
(1) ¯ oxygen demand ( ¯ C.O -- ¯ B.P )
(3) Inhibit the release of Renin --- ¯ angiotensin II---

Indications
The combination is indicated for the
treatment of hypertension and
chronic stable angina.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dosage is one tablet
daily.
*If necessary, the dosage may be increased
to two tablets daily.
* The dosage however should be individualized.
Side effects
• Headache
• Palpitation
• Flushing
• Oedema
• Depression
• Dizziness
• Dyspepsia
• Dyspnoea
• Muscle cramps
• Fatigue
• Cold extremities
• Bradycardia
Precautions
• Should be used with caution in patient with
airway obstruction. ( bronchospasm )
* Can be used in patient with renal impairment. Caution may be necessary if the creatinine clearance is < 30 ml/min. ( reduction in excretion of atenolol )
• Caution may be necessary if liver damage is present. (prolongation of elimination of amlodipine )
• Pregnancy – should be used during pregnancy only
if expected benefit outweighs the
potential foetal risk.
• Lactation- should not be used by nursing mothers.
If its use is considered necessary ,breast
feeding should be stopped.
