COMPOSITION

Description
• It is a bronchodilator,classified as a methylxanthine
• Smooth muscle relaxation and supression of response of airways to stimuli
• Increases the force of contraction of diaphragmatic muscles.

Indications
• Symptomatic relief and prevention of bronchospasm associated with asthma
• Chronic bronchitis
• Emphysema

Dosage and administration
Adults
• Starting dose-16mg/kg or 400mg in two divided doses and gradually increased up to 800 mg /day to obtain maximum benefit
• Should not be chewed or crushed.

Contraindications
• Hypersensitivity to xanthine derivatives
• Pts with active peptic ulcer disease
• Pts with seizure disorders

Warning and precautions
• Nausea & restlessness may occur frequently when initiating therapy
• Pregnancy
• Not known
• Lactation
• It is excreted into breast milk and may cause irritability or other signs of mild toxicity in nursing human infants

Side effects
• Nausea
• Vomitting
• Headache
• Restlessness
• Insomnia
• Cardiac arrythmia
• Intractable seizures
